The 1857 tower, the last of its kind, was designated a New York City Landmark in 1967 and was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1976. While the fire tower network—which at its peak included 11 towers—fell into disuse in the 1870s, the bell atop the Mount Morris tower continued to sound for timekeeping and churchgoing purposes until about 1909. In 2000, architect and preservationist Angel Ayón, Principal of AYON Studio, began and continued advising stakeholders, including the Mt. Morris Park Community Improvement Association and the Marcus Garvey Park Alliance, in their campaign to save the tower. As a result of their collective advocacy, the tower’s rehabilitation was completed by the City.

Tour the historic Mount Morris Fire Watchtower, a prominent feature of Marcus Garvey Park and its neighborhood. Get inside, ring the 5,000 lb. bell, and walk the spiral staircase to enjoy the views. Access is limited to 12 people at a time; last entry to the tower at 2:30. Lines are expected, but please note that OHNY Weekend Passports do not provide expedited access at this location.

The top of the tower is only accessible by stairs.
