General Grant National Memorial is one of over 440 National Park Service-managed sites in the United States and its territories. Since 1959, the National Park Service has been the steward and caretaker of the final resting place of Ulysses S. Grant, the Commanding General of the United States (Union) Army during the American Civil War and later, during Reconstruction, the country’s 18th President. General Grant National Memorial is a tribute to the man who is credited with winning the Civil War and is considered to be a symbol of gratitude from a thankful Nation. Visitors to the memorial can expect to learn about the life of General Ulysses S. Grant, his contribution to the war, his goals and accomplishments as President and will see these aspects of his life symbolized through Greco–Roman architecture.
The mausoleum is not an accessible building. There are no ramps or elevators available and the staircases do not have hand rails. The visitor center buliding is an accessible building and is located to the west of the mausoleum across the south bound lane of Riverside Drive.
