When NYC Parks installed its first green roof in the spring of 2007, it was among the first in the city. Since then, the green roof program has grown to encompass over 30 unique growing systems covering 50,000 sq. ft. The agency has further expanded its green roof to 40 other buildings and about 300,000 sq. ft. across the city. The green roof program at NYC Parks connects to the future, as all rooftops in the city that are undergoing major construction will need to have a green roof or solar panel, as per Local Laws 92 and 94 of 2019. Visitors will learn about different green roof systems, soil and plant type and design.
Saturday & Sunday Tours: 10am-2pm, tours ongoing for up to 20 people at a time on a first-come, first-served basis; every hour on the hour.
There are three ways of getting to the Randalls Island: walking, public transportation and driving.
Public transportation: take the bus or train to Lex and 125th street. Then you can take the M35, the stop is located at the corner of Lex and 125th St. on the North side of the street. When you get on the M35 you can (1) get off at the "MAIN RDWY/OPP PARKS & RECREATION" stop; this will take about 20 minutes because the bus will go around the entire island, and this is the 2nd to last stop. Option two (2) is to get off at the first stop on the island "MAIN RDWY/EXIT RAMP" then walk North along the sidewalk, the attached map shows the direction in red. This route should be a bit faster.
You can also walk across the RFK bridge. The entrance to the pedestrian walkway is on 2nd Ave and 124th Street. The ramp will take you near the ferry dock, and you can follow walk north on the path to the building.
For GPS driving directions, use the same address listed above: 20 Bronx Shore Road.
