The East River Generating Station produces both electricity and steam to serve Con Edison customers. This tour will allow the participant to take a guided walk through a power facility that was built in the 1920s and upgraded over the years. Located at the edge of the East Village in Manhattan, the design and appearance of the facility is very much driven by the adage "form follows function." The various functions of the facility—making electricity, generating high pressure steam, safely and reliably serving customers—dictate the configuration and design of the station.
