Harlem River Bridges, Parks and Landmarks Walking Tour
Nathan Kensinger, Duane Bailey-Castro, and NYC H2O
Highbridge, Bronx
Sat, October 18th, 2025
12:00pm — 2:30pm
Join NYC H2O for a walk along the historic waterfront of the Harlem River in the Bronx. This tour will visit several recently restored parks and landmarks on the Bronx coastline of the river, including the High Bridge, Highbridge Park, Bridge Park, and Roberto Clemente State Park. Along the way, participants will hear about the forgotten history and ecologies of this remote shoreline, which was once home to wetlands, grand hotels, steamship excursions, and amusement parks. The tour will also consider the lack of public access on the Harlem River – along its entire shoreline in the Bronx, there are just two official access points to the water.
This walk will be led by Nathan Kensinger and Duane Bailey-Castro, who have been photographing the Harlem River for the past 15 years. This walk is part of a series called Walking the Harlem River, created for NYC H2O, which has been generously supported by the New York-New Jersey Harbor & Estuary Program and the Hudson River Foundation. Please note: This walk is one way, starting at the High Bridge and ending at Roberto Clemente State Park.
This is an outdoor walking tour covering 2.5 miles, and participants should dress for the weather and bring a water bottle. The route includes a long staircase and some uneven city streets, but is otherwise routed on paved sidewalks and pathways.
No dogs or pets permitted.
Children are welcome accompanied by an adult (recommended for ages 10+). All participants, including children, must have a ticket.
