The exhibition “Fantastical Realities: Sandra Caplan, Maya Ciarrocchi, and Ray Ciarrocchi” marks the first time two generations of the Ciarrocchi-Caplan family will exhibit together. Ray Ciarrocchi (b. 1933) focuses on landscape, Sandra Caplan (b. 1936) on still life, and Maya Ciarrocchi (b. 1967) works across disciplines. The worlds they create and the realities they express are intimately connected to the times in which they work and in which their practices have evolved.

Ray Ciarrocchi has a strong formalist practice related to the physical aspects of the landscape. He has stated, “My paintings are about my responses to light moving over a landscape and the transformation effected by that light. The challenge of finding the equivalent in paint for this mutability provides a seemingly endless silent dialogue between myself, the subject, and the canvas.” Atmospheric conditions are also important to Sandra Caplan, as is bold color. Still life objects taken from daily life represent people from the past, emotional ties, and memories of places that hold meaning. Textiles and cyanotypes by Ciarrocchi and Caplan’s daughter, Maya Ciarrocchi, are related to “LoopCurrent,” a project that explores humanity’s lasting impact on the planet and imagines a world shaped by our descendants. “LoopCurrent” uses diverse media to construct a world discovered by archeologists of the future and is a response to the present-day climate catastrophe occurring in real time. It asks, what new, fantastical spaces can we build from the residue of destruction and loss?
