The Brooklyn Army Terminal is one of the largest centers of manufacturing in New York City, home to over 4,000 jobs and 100 businesses, making products ranging from clothing and art to precision machinery and packaged foods. On these special tours during OHNY Weekend, visitors will see behind the scenes of production and distribution spaces and learn how this massive former military complex has been adaptively reused for modern industry. Each tour will visit multiple spaces on a different theme.
Food Manufacturing Tour: 11:30am
Get a rare inside look at several small- and medium-sized food manufacturers that form the backbone of NYC’s food production economy, the city’s largest manufacturing sector, including Norwegian Baked, a maker of knekkebrød crisp bread, among other companies.
Circular Economy & Sustainability Tour: 2:30pm
The Brooklyn Army Terminal has also developed a cluster of companies committed to sustainability, working in fields ranging from energy efficiency to upcycling to waste reduction. This tour will include a visit to the distribution warehouse of gift retailer Uncommon Goods, the Brooklyn Army Terminal’s largest employer and a pioneering company in corporate social responsibility.
The tours are 90 minutes long with limited seating available. The tour route is wheelchair accessible.
Participants should wear closed-toe, flat-soled shoes and may be asked to wear protective equipment, including safety goggles, hairnets, or shoe covers.
