Discover the Alice Austen House, a National Historic Landmark and LGBTQ+ historic site, set within a stunning 15-acre waterfront park with sweeping views of New York Harbor.

OHNY Weekend visitors will receive a limited-edition zine created exclusively for the event. This illustrated guide will lead you through the park and grounds, spotlighting special features such as the Queer Ecologies Project Garden, wetlands that nurture a rich variety of plant and bird life and one of NYC’s official “Great Trees” — a majestic London Plane that has stood since the Austen family purchased the home, even surviving a dramatic lightning strike.

Follow shoreline paths and meadows to the park’s overlook, offering an unmatched perspective on the harbor, then step inside the Victorian Gothic cottage museum where pioneering photographer Alice Austen lived and worked for nearly 50 years. The house and its surrounding landscape reveal Austen’s adventurous spirit, her relationship with lifelong partner Gertrude Tate, and the deep connection between place and creativity.

Guests may also rent a Polaroid camera during their walk to create their own keepsake images, a nod to Austen’s passion for photography. Whether visitors come for the art, history, or natural beauty, this self-guided experience offers a unique way to explore one of Staten Island’s most storied sites.

There is a ramp entrance to the historic home from the parking lot at the rear of the house. The public areas of the museum are largely wheelchair accessible since the galleries and period rooms are on the first floor. For more information about accessibility, please call the Alice Austen House at (718) 816-4506 x10.
