Snug Harbor’s Newhouse Center: “Entre la Coca y el Oro”
Newhouse Center for Contemporary Art at Snug Harbor
Randall Manor, Staten Island
Sat, October 18th, 2025
12:00pm — 4:00pm
The Newhouse Center for Contemporary Art is housed in the oldest building at Snug Harbor, the Main Hall (Building C). For nearly fifty years, the Newhouse has been an incubator for bold and innovative artists developing new work, promoting inquiry, and advancing scholarship.
The historic Main Hall building, designed by Minard Lafever for Sailors' Snug Harbor and first opened in 1833, contains an exciting blend of historical architecture, including the Victorian-era ceiling mural (1884, restored by EverGreene in 1993) and contemporary art exhibitions.
Reopened for the first time in over a year, visitors can also view the new exhibition "Entre la Coca y el Oro (Between Coca and Gold)" by Tatiana Arocha. Weaving art and community together to reclaim the narrative surrounding the coca plant, the exhibition explores coca’s cultural, spiritual, social, and ecological significance while pushing back against colonial and extractivist perspectives.
The ADA entrance to the Newhouse Center is located in Shinbone Alley through Building G. Take the elevator to the 1st floor/gallery level, and there is a wheelchair lift that a staff member must operate. Visitors requesting accommodations should email newhouse@snug-harbor.org 1 business day in advance.
The restrooms are located in a separate, adjoining building.
Exhibition text is available in English and Spanish.
No animals are allowed in the building, except for service animals, which are permitted.
No food or drink permitted in the galleries.
Children are welcome accompanied by an adult.
