Ever wondered how the stone carvings on the facade of the Dakota were made? Or Saint Patrick's Cathedral? Visit the workshop of the only local organization dedicated to promoting and teaching the (almost) lost art of stone carving. Visitors will see demonstrations—the chips will fly—and have a chance to give it a try themselves. Kids too! Visitors will also see in-progress and finished work by students and master carver Chris Pellettieri.

Friday Demos: 12:30 pm, 1:30 pm, 2:30 pm, and 3:30 pm

Saturday Demos: 10:30 pm, 11:30 pm, 12:30 pm, and 1:30 pm

Founder, master carver, and NYC native Chris Pellettieri is opening up the workspace and demonstrating the skills he learned as an apprentice at the Cathedral of St. John the Divine in 1989. He will give visitors a rare glimpse into the mysterious ancient craft that turns humble rocks into expressive and inspiring sculptures. Visitors will be given the opportunity to try using traditional tools to break chips off a block of stone.

Family Programming: The entire workshop is family-friendly. Small children are invited to experience using a mallet and chisel to chip away at a block of stone and reveal surprises within. A block of plaster "stone" has pennies, nickels, dimes, and quarters mixed in. Children aged 11 and above can try carving a real block of stone.

Visitors with questions about acccessibility should email info@ohny.org by October 13.

Innovation in Preservation: Uncover the techniques, tools, and materials helping practitioners breathe new life into historic architecture, landscape design, and decorative and fine arts, produced in partnership with the Richard Hampton Jenrette Foundation. Explore more.

Family Friendly: Bring the kids! More than a dozen OHNY Weekend partners are offering special activities for families. Most activities are free and open to the public. Explore more.
