The Museum of Contemporary African Diasporan Art (MoCADA) celebrates the cultural breadth of Africa and its diaspora through a diverse range of exhibitions, public art, interactive learning, media, and community-based interventions. Born in 1999, MoCADA was designed by founder Laurie Angela Cumbo as an equity model that centers art and culture as a conduit for revitalizing under-resourced Brooklyn neighborhoods, while simultaneously championing under-served artists from the area.
Twenty-five years later, as Brooklyn's first and only museum dedicated to the creation and interpretation of contemporary Black arts and culture has grown from a grassroots organization into an internationally-recognized vehicle for social change. Through MoCADA’s inclusive community practice, the museum creates pathways that dispel misconceptions and enable people and artists to thrive respectively. Artistic programs here have nurtured and furthered the careers (economic mobility and public visibility) of 650+ artists from 30+ countries. Simultaneously, MoCADA has delivered 250+ exhibitions and 1,500+ public programs across three venues, via music and talk podcasts on MoCADA Radio, and off-site in the streets, parks, schools, public housing communities, and beyond.
A curator will be available to answer questions in the gallery, and tastings of coffee and food from the African Diaspora will be available in the cafe during open hours.
The elevator is wheelchair accessible, which will take you to the 2nd floor to visit our cafe and gallery which are all on one level. The ADA entrance is at the corner of Ashland Place and Lafayette Avenue, just beyond the first glass doors.
MoCADA's gallery offers audio loop services for people living with hearing impairments.
While photography is allowed on site, no drink or food is allowed in the gallery. Animals are not permitted due to staff allergies.
