Special Exhibition Tour: 4pm

Take an in-person guided tour of MOCA, featuring its special exhibition, "Hapa.me — 25 Years of The Hapa Project." In 2001, artist Kip Fulbeck began traveling the country photographing multiracial individuals of all ages and walks of life. Derived from the Hawaiian word for “half,” the word “hapa” has been embraced as a term of pride by many whose mixed-race heritage includes Asian or Pacific Islander ancestry. Fulbeck’s work sought to address in words and images the one question that Hapa people are frequently asked: What are you?

This exhibition comes at a time of increasing awareness and identification with being mixed race. Originating at the Japanese American National Museum in Los Angeles, this New York presentation will feature 30 portraits and responses of local subjects, installed amidst a hand-painted mural that captures the beauty of being mixed. The tour will conclude with a Q&A session with Herb Tam, Chief Curator and Senior Director of Exhibitions and Programs.

Research and Collections Center Tour: 5pm

The Research and Collections Center is a publicly accessible research and oral history workspace. Take a behind-the-scenes tour and join a Q&A with Yue Ma, Director of the Collections and Research Center. The Center recently completed its relocation to its permanent home at 215 Centre Street, within the museum building. The Center archivally preserves and provides research access to the museum’s vast collection of more than 85,000 objects documenting New York Chinatown and Chinese American history, featuring state-of-the-art collections storage, a reference library, an oral history booth, and digitization stations.

On January 23, 2020, MOCA experienced a devastating five-alarm fire at its collections and archives site in the heart of Chinatown. Since October 2020, recovery and conservation of MOCA’s 85,000-object collection of Chinese American history and heritage have been ongoing through multi-pronged efforts. The Research and Collections Center also serves as the hub of MOCA’s conservation work and workshop.

Coat check is available at the museum. Flash photography is prohibited.
