The Goethe-Institut New York presents "Likenesses: Speaking with the Selves," a two-artist exhibition featuring Li-Ming Hu (b. 1987, New Zealand, lives in NYC) and Charmaine Poh (b. 1990, Singapore, lives in Berlin). Central to this exhibition is a biographical experience, shared by both artists, of television fame at a young age. In the 2000’s, Hu received a breakout role on New Zealand’s popular soap-opera “Shortland Street,” and was later cast as a Power Ranger, among other roles. Similarly, Poh starred as the character E-Ching in a hit Singaporean children’s detective show, “We are R.E.M.,” around the same time. Hu’s and Poh’s works on display in this exhibition respond to this time in their lives. Revisiting their former roles, the artists now use performance, installation, and video to re-create and manipulate the context in which their likenesses were used.
The installation "Convention" (2019/2025) restages a “comic-con” style booth where Hu revamps her past roles within the Power Rangers franchise. The installation is activated by Hu in costume, snapping photos and signing headshots for fans - an action that blurs the lines between performer and character, and prods at the spectacle of fandom and the industry built around it. Zachary B. Feldman, the curator of the exhibition, will offer additional context and information to audiences who attend the curator’s tour.
