Tucked away on the sixth floor of The General Society of Mechanics and Tradesmen, the Institute of Classical Architecture & Art's Cast Hall displays a collection of historical plaster casts of Classical and Renaissance architecture and sculpture alongside fragments of historical woodwork from significant buildings and country houses in the United Kingdom.
The Cast Hall at the Institute of Classical Architecture & Art is a gem of 19th-century New York City's art collecting past. Filled with plaster casts originally owned by The Metropolitan Museum of Art, the gallery now plays host to scores of visitors, ranging from students to practicing artists. Visit the Cast Hall for open sketching and to learn about this historic art practice and collection.
Friday & Saturday Talks: 11:30am, 1:30, and 3:30pm
The Gallery Coordinator will be on site to give first-come, first-served gallery talks throughout each day to help visitors learn more about the historic collection. Art making will also be available throughout the duration. Talks are 30 minutes each.
Family Programming: Many artists throughout history learned their skills by drawing plaster casts. Kids can try their hand at sketching like a neoclassical artist, using different colors of charcoal and paper to capture the light and shadow they observe!
There is an elevator and no step access into the gallery, but building restrooms are not universally wheelchair accessible.
There will be large print gallery guides available.
Visitors with large bags will be asked to leave them in a safe area outside of the gallery.
No food or drinks permitted in the gallery.
Children are welcome accompanied by an adult.
Family Friendly: Bring the kids! More than a dozen OHNY Weekend partners are offering special activities for families. Most activities are free and open to the public. Explore more.
