The second-oldest library in the city includes a light-filled atrium that is used as a vibrant programming space by the General Society and other non-profits. Overlooking the Library on a striking wrought iron balcony is the John M. Mossman Lock Collection, which contains more than 370 locks, keys, and tools dating from 2000 BC to the early 20th century. The Society's archives and history date back to 1785. In addition to the Library and Lock Collection, the Society's distinctive Member's Assembly Room is also open to the public only on OHNY Weekend.
Entry to the ground floor library requires stairs and is not wheelchair accessible, but the other floors are accessible by elevator.
Children are welcome accompanied by an adult. Recommended for ages 10+.
Designed by Lamb & Rich and acquired by the General Society in 1899; extensions to the building were added by Ralph Townsend in 1903-05
