12:00pm — 3:00pm
The Ridgewood-Glendale SoundWalk is a participatory musical exploration of Queens neighborhoods, led by Concetta Abbate. Participants will embark on a guided walk that will meander through local businesses and pathways leading to green space, ultimately culminating in a performance and picnic potluck at Highland Park's Ridgewood Reservoir. Along the way, attendees will engage in interactive journaling exercises, identifying the unique "Sound Marks" of each location and contributing to the creation of a participatory musical composition inspired by the neighborhood's diverse sonic landscape. This project not only celebrates the richness of the community's cultural tapestry but also sheds light on areas requiring improvement, such as disability accessibility and pedestrian safety infrastructure.
Feel free to bring along snacks and drinks to share for a picnic in the park after the show! Soundwalk journals and maps with illustrations by Sophia Kaplan will be available for purchase at the event.
Music composed by Concetta Abbate and performed by Concetta Abbate, Judette Elliston, Elliot Cooper Cole, and Jimmy Kraft.
The event will be largely held outdoors on public sidewalks and cover about 2.5 miles. Wear comfortable shows and bring snacks and water. Participants may join for one portion of the walk if the walk from beginning to end is too long.
These accessible features will be available for the first portion of the tour but there will be no bathrooms close by on our last stop of the tour.
