Leaning Out Film Screening at UnionDocs
American Institute of Steel Construction, sOlareye, and UnionDocs Center for Documentary Art
Ridgewood, Queens
Fri, October 17th, 2025
6:00pm — 7:30pm
The American Institute of Steel Construction presents a screening of Leaning Out, a documentary film about the World Trade Center's lead structural engineer, Leslie E. Robertson, at UnionDocs Center for Documentary Art. A talk with structural engineer and high-rise building expert Jon Magnusson, Chairman Emeritus of Magnusson Klemencic Associates, will follow.
Leaning Out tells the story of a man with a perspective like no other on the planet. Leslie E. Robertson, a builder of iconic high-rises and cultural centers across the globe, oversaw the construction of NYC's World Trade Center and has been haunted by its fall ever since. A longtime pacifist and activist, Robertson is driven by his fight for human rights and a powerful union with accomplished engineer and partner SawTeen See, a woman who emboldened the man she loved, expanded his worldview and ultimately saved him. An intimate story about fulfillment, fragility, and a fighting spirit, told through interviews with Robertson and those closest to him.
This event is hosted by UnionDocs. UnionDocs (UNDO) is a Center for Documentary Art that presents, produces, publishes, and educates. Dedicated to innovative and community-building forms of documentary art in New York City, UNDO provides a vibrant space where storytelling, experimentation, journalism, politics, and poetry intersect.
UnionDocs' front entrance on Onderdonk Avenue is currently under renovation. During this time, access to the building is through a temporary entrance located on Dekalb Avenue, which is unfortunately not wheelchair accessible.
