Four Sparrow Marsh, which sits along Jamaica Bay, is now home to thriving native grasses and a growing population of sparrows, the birds for which the area is named. This summer, the Department of Environmental Protection and the Department of Design and Construction completed a $7 million project that restored three acres of wetlands at the marsh, including regrading, flood control, and the removal of about 9,000 tons of soil. The new vegetation not only filters water from Jamaica Bay but also supports juvenile fish and other wildlife. Marine Park Alliance welcomes the public to this new, flood-resistant natural habitat on a guided tour with retired NYC Parks Chief Naturalist Mike Feller, who served as a consultant on this project.
Participants will meet in the Marine Park Golf Course parking lot before crossing Flatbush Avenue and walking a short distance through unpaved and uneven surfaces before reaching the restoration site. Participants must be comfortable crossing a busy street using crosswalks and walking on uneven grades.
Close-toed shoes required.
The tour is recommended for ages 16+
