At the heart of NYCHA’s Kingsborough Houses in Brooklyn stands Exodus and Dance, a monumental frieze created in 1941 by Harlem Renaissance sculptor Richmond Barthé. Completed during the WPA era under the Federal Art Project, the relief is a rare example of public art in public housing, reflecting themes of resilience, spirituality, and joy.

For decades, the piece weathered the elements, its details fading from view—until a major restoration effort brought it back to life. Between December 2023 and July 2025, NYCHA and the Public Housing Community Fund partnered with Jemco Electrical Contractors, EverGreene Architectural Arts, Ronnette Riley Architect, Jablonski Building Conservation, and Fisher Marantz Stone to carefully conserve and relight the work. The restored frieze was unveiled in August 2025.

Visitors will see the frieze newly illuminated in its full brilliance, learn the story of Barthé—one of the most important Black sculptors of the 20th century—and explore how WPA-era public art and New Deal housing intersect. The tour will also highlight the role of residents, preservation experts, and public-private partnerships in safeguarding cultural treasures.

Looking ahead, participants will hear about new public art installations planned for Kingsborough that draw inspiration from Exodus and Dance, along with an important oral history project that uplifts residents’ stories and connections to this place. This OHNY Weekend tour offers a rare chance to experience world-class art in a public housing community—where history, creativity, and community pride come together.
