The Woolworth was the tallest building in the world from its opening in 1913 until it was overtaken by the nearby Bank of Manhattan building at 40 Wall Street in 1930. Nicknamed the “Cathedral of Commerce” for its opulent lobby resembling a grand cathedral, the Woolworth is one of the first modern skyscrapers. Built under the direction of Cass Gilbert, one of America’s most important architects, and a team of experts, it is an engineering feat that changed the field for decades to come.
Open House New York members are invited to visit the Woolworth Building’s iconic lobby with Woolworth Building expert Bob Gelber. Not a member? Join today for a chance to win tickets to this special OHNY Weekend encore.
