Get a sneak peek of the new Education & Welcome Center at The Green-Wood Cemetery before it officially opens to the public in 2026 on this tour with Architecture Research Office principals Kim Yao and Stephen Cassell.
Founded in 1838, the 478-acre landscape of The Green-Wood Cemetery is both a cultural landmark and an active cemetery, providing a range of public events and activities. The new Education and Welcome Center strengthens visitors’ experience of Green-Wood as a cultural destination for art, history, and nature. The Center consolidates previously disparate programs and offices into one accessible location, supports existing and expanded public programs, and orients visitors before they chart their own paths through the main entrance across the street.
The new 17,000-sq. ft. building nestles around a restored historic Victorian greenhouse. Community classrooms and staff offices support the Cemetery’s varied public programming, which ranges from birding and tree walks to historic tours and art installations. Two gallery spaces will enable the display of Cemetery collections as well as traveling exhibitions. The building will also house a new archive for staff and visitors.
Large windows on the second floor offer expansive views towards the Cemetery and the Richard Upjohn-designed arched gate, while a sculpted green roof and entry courtyard complement Green-Wood’s hills and winding paths. Custom glazed terra cotta creates a dynamic, modern façade and materially references the brownstone of the Upjohn Arches. Targeting LEED Gold, the new all-electric building balances Green-Wood’s commitment to historic preservation with an inspiring sustainable design.
