From Pollution to Progress: A Walking Tour of Gowanus
Fifth Avenue Committee (FAC)
Gowanus, Brooklyn
Sat, October 18th, 2025
10:00am — 11:30am
12:00pm — 1:30pm
Take part in an outdoor walking tour of Gowanus, a community that includes public housing, brownstones and, increasingly, new development along one of the most polluted bodies of water in America. This tour explores the history of environmental degradation in Gowanus and the emerging movement for housing and environmental justice along the canal, led by local organizers with the Gowanus Neighborhood Coalition for Justice (GNCJ) who fought to ensure an equitable rezoning of the neighborhood in 2021.
Tours will be led by Fifth Avenue Committee's Executive Director Michelle de la Uz, and Director of Programs Sarah Batchu.
This is an outdoor walking tour on sidewalks and often on uneven terrain. Guests should dress for the weather and bring a water bottle.
ADA accessible bathrooms and water fountains are available at 621 Degraw Street at the start/end of the tour. Tour will be led in English and the tour guide will use a microphone. Ticketholders requesting additional accommodations should email info@ohny.org by October 13.
Children are welcome, accompanied by an adult. All persons attending, including children, must have a ticket.
