12:00pm — 4:00pm

Located within the historic Brooklyn Army Terminal, Cass Gilbert’s monumental 1919 complex, BioBAT Art Space is a rare cultural hub where art and science meet. For OHNY Weekend, visitors will step inside this landmark to experience ADAPTIVE HUES & CIRCULAR FUTURES, a biodesign exhibition by the award-winning pHen Collective, from Budapest's Maholy Nagy University for the Arts.

At the center of the show is the pHen pen, a refillable, open-source, 3D-printed drawing tool that creates a spectrum of colors using pH-responsive inks made from beet pigment. With this single tool, artists and everyday users can replace dozens of disposable markers, inviting visitors to rethink the environmental cost of creativity.

The exhibition combines art installations, videos, and biodesign innovations that connect audiences of all ages to the chemistry of color, the potential of sustainable materials, and the imaginative power of interdisciplinary collaboration. Visitors will discover how cabbage can become ink, how biology can serve as a medium for design, and how open-source thinking might shape the future of the art materials industry.

Curated and produced by BioBAT Art Space & the Biodesign Challenge, ADAPTIVE HUES & CIRCULAR FUTURES exemplifies the gallery’s mission to champion projects at the intersection of art, biology, and technology. By visiting during OHNY Weekend, audiences not only explore an architectural icon but also engage with artists and scientists who are pioneering sustainable futures.

Saturday Tours: Guided exhibition tours will be available upon request.
