The Old Stone House & Washington Park (OSH) is a 1934 Robert Moses reconstruction of the 1699 Vechte family farmhouse. The area is known as the site of the Battle of Brooklyn (August 1776), the largest battle of the American Revolutionary War. OSH's permanent exhibit looks at the history of conflict on the site, from the nearest Lenape town colonized by the Dutch, to the British Occupation, and a little baseball history as well.
Stop by to explore the site history, as well as a new contemporary exhibit, "Rooted Resistance," about ecological care, and wander through 1.5 acres of gardens. Kids will love the popular playground, and on Sunday visitors can explore the Down to Earth Farmer's Market adjacent to the park. This is also a perfect jumping off point for a day exploring the many artist studios participating in Arts Gowanus' Open Studios program.
Sunday Activity: 3-4pm. Open rehearsal with the Brooklyn Brandenburgers.
The Old Stone House Is located in the center of a park located between 4th and 5th Avenues and 3rd and 4th Streets. All paths are wheelchair accessible. The main door faces into the playground. The first floor permanent exhibit and restrooms are fully accessible. Visitors with questions about accessibility accommodations may call the Old Stone House at 718-768-3195.
Hearing and visual accessibility support is provided through a Bloomberg Connects guide. A general information brochure is available in Spanish.
