Addressing social injustice and thermal comfort is key to driving change. That’s why, in partnership with the University of Pennsylvania, Henning Larsen secured funding from the Ramboll Foundation to develop a low-cost, accessible urban cooling solution, KlimaKover, for all communities. An international team of researchers from institutions in the United States, Canada, Asia, and Europe developed and installed a prototype pavilion that provides thermal comfort without the adverse effects of traditional air conditioning. KlimaKover’s low-energy design offers a sustainable alternative, which is potentially adaptable for all sorts of environments—bus shelters, playgrounds, parks—ensuring resilience and comfort.

Designed for disassembly, this first showcase of KlimaKover at Governors Island provides cool respite from the summer sun, within the context of other innovations and initiatives featured on the Island. During OHNY Weekend, designers from Henning Larsen and several collaborating engineers and fabricators will be on-site to explain the design, technology, installation, and impact of KlimaKover. Come cool down at KlimaKover!

Governors Island is accessible via the NYC Ferry (multiple routes) or the Governors Island Ferry departing from 10 South Street, Manhattan. A ticket is required to board the ferry. Ferry tickets may be purchased online or in-person at the ferry terminal kiosk.

KlimaKover is installed on a lawn area at Governors Island near Liggett Terrace: (https://maps.app.goo.gl/eWA4JGuTgKWDNPTp7). The structure is wheelchair-accessible, but crossing the lawn may be difficult in a wheelchair.

The installation is outdoors and open to the elements. Visitors should dress for the weather.
