National Sawdust | Brooklyn, NY, US

We’re starting with National Sawdust – a nonprofit venue in Brooklyn that commissions, produces, and presents programming rooted in sound. Founded in 2015 by composer Paola Prestini, it offers a community for individuals to discover new and varied music. National Sawdust has a long-term partnership with Meyer Sound, which provides one of the best sound systems in the city. The spatial sound technology allows a rehearsal room to have acoustics comparable to a symphony hall. To celebrate their 10th Anniversary season, Bridgett Lacombe photographed 23 artists who embody their mission. You can dive into the series and hear about each artist’s process on Bloomberg Connects, and while you’re there, we recommend exploring the “MOTIF” series and their “Photo Archive.

NOoSPHERE Arts | Brooklyn, NY, US

NOoSPHERE Arts is a new cultural center in the heart of the industrial zone of Greenpoint, Brooklyn, that focuses on the intersection of art and ecology. Their mission is to produce and share experimental arts programming because NOoSPHERE believes art has the power to move people where lectures fall short. With a hub of talent that unites music, dance, visual arts, theater, film, poetry, and prose, their collaborative productions foster connections between migrant artists and locals. Take a look at their “WE ARE NATURE Series” and “KWBS Residency Award” to see some of the work they’ve created and hosted so far, including performances that take place on a green roof of a film studio!

Next stop: Tinseltown, where the GRAMMY Museum celebrates the music of yesterday and today to inspire the music of tomorrow. Expect a range of interactive exhibitions, including the permanent “Mono to Immersive” that traces the sonic evolution of recorded sound, and “Michael Jackson: Showman,” which features a short film about the making of Thriller. Both of which are available to preview in their guide. To understand what’s in store, watch the “Museum Overview” and listen to the “Welcome from CEO Michael Sticka.” And when you visit, don’t forget to stop by the newly renovated Ray Charles Terrace for show-stopping views of Downtown LA and the famous Hollywood sign.

Stax Museum | Memphis, TN, US

Located on the original site of the Stax Records studio in Memphis, Tennessee, the Stax Museum celebrates the artists who recorded there and many more. Stax produced some of the most-loved music of the last century. Their legacy is tied to the city, specifically “Soulsville USA,” the talent-packed neighborhood where the studio is located – residents included Artha Franklin, Memphis Minnie, and Booker T. Jones. Get a condensed Stax Museum Tour with “The Greatest Hits” or start to discover some of the 2,000 museum’s memorabilia and the history of the music with “Deep Cuts.

Located in the Brutalist architecture hub of London’s Southbank, the National Theatre has been sparking imagination and bringing people together in this building since 1976. Learn more about their story through their “History of the Theatre” video. In true Open House fashion, the National Theatre provides access to view set construction and assembly, scenic painting, and prop-making twice a week via their Sherling Backstage Walkway. Can’t make it in person? You can “explore backstage” through their guide or hear from actors such as Jessie Buckley and Josh O’Connor with access to audio from the National Theatre’s Life in Stages series.

Just along the Thames from the National Theatre, you’ll find the Southbank Centre, where the Philharmonia is the resident orchestra based in the Royal Festival Hall. This world-class symphony orchestra performs around 30 concerts per year and is led by Principal Conductor Santtu-Matias Rouvali. In the app, there’s a section dedicated to ‘unpacking the orchestra’ where you can get “A guide to the orchestra layout” and learn about every instrument. It also has all the details about their upcoming seasons.
